Description

Machame route, also known as the Whisky route, has become very popular. This is camping route which offers spectacular views of various landscapes such as Mt Meru, Pare Mountains, Lake Chala and Lake Jipe. While the 6 day itinerary is very possible, it is very benefit able to have the seven days machame climb because of having one more extra day for acclimatization and resting before the summit day. Doing this will maximize your chance of reaching the top.

Itinerary

Day 1 - Machame Gate (1490 m) – Machame Camp (2980 m)

After breakfast at your hotel, you will be transported to Machame Village and then proceed to Machame Gate. The hike begins through the rainforest, where you may encounter rain, mud, and wildlife. You will have lunch along the trail and reach Machame Camp in the late afternoon. The porters will set up your tents, and a hot dinner will be served.

Day 2 - Machame Camp (2980 m) – Shira Camp (3840 m)

You continue your ascent, leaving the rainforest and entering the heathland and moorland vegetation. The trail crosses streams and leads to the Shira Plateau, offering a beautiful view of the Western Breach and glaciers. Tents will be set up prior to your arrival, and dinner will be provided.

Day 3 - Shira Camp (3840 m) – Lava Tower (4630 m) – Barranco Camp (3950 m)

You leave the moorland environment and enter a semi-desert and rocky landscape. After walking for about 5 hours, you reach the impressive Lava Tower. You then descend to Barranco Camp, enjoying views of the Great Barranco Wall. Drinking and washing water will be provided, and dinner will be served.

Day 4 Barranco Camp (3950 m) – Karanga Camp (3950 m)

Today, you conquer the Great Barranco Wall, which is a Class 2 hike that proves to be easier than expected. After reaching the top of the wall, you hike through the Karanga Valley, providing an ideal day for acclimatization.

Day 5 - Karanga Camp (3959 m) – Barafu Hut (4600 m)

Leaving Karanga Camp, you intersect with the Mweka Route and continue hiking for about an hour to reach Barafu Hut. This campsite is located on a rocky ridge and offers no accessible water. After an early dinner, you rest before the summit attempt.

Day 6 - Summit Attempt

You begin your summit attempt around midnight. The challenging ascent takes you to Stella Point and then to Uhuru Peak, the highest point of Mount Kilimanjaro. After reaching the summit and capturing memories, you descend to Barafu Camp for lunch and continue to Mweka Hut for dinner and rest.

Day 7 - Mweka Camp (3100 m) – Mweka Gate (1980 m)

Following breakfast, you celebrate with the staff and descend to Mweka Gate. Here, you receive certificates of completion from the National Park. Afterward, you descend to Mweka Village for lunch and return to Arusha for showers and further celebrations.

Additional Information: - The trip is fully supported, providing spacious guest tents, mattresses, and pillows. A mess tent with lightweight tables and chairs, as well as cutlery, is also included. - Each day, you will have experienced guides, porters, and a chef who will take care of setting up camp, cooking meals, and ensuring your comfort. - The hike involves various landscapes, including rainforest, heathland, moorland, and rocky areas, providing diverse and scenic experiences. - Altitude effects, such as headaches and shortness of breath, are normal and should be expected during the ascent. Adequate acclimatization is built into the itinerary. - Summit night requires an early start, and the ascent can be mentally and physically demanding. However, reaching Uhuru Peak is a significant accomplishment. - The descent takes you through different vegetation
