The Shira Route offers an alternative path to conquer Mount Kilimanjaro from the western side, closely resembling the Lemosho Route. Climbers on the Shira route bypass Shira 1 camp by utilizing vehicles to reach Shira Gate. The journey begins at a higher elevation of 3,600m, with the first overnight stay at Simba Camp. Subsequently, the route merges with the Lemosho Route and continues along the Southern Circuit. It is worth noting that climbing Kilimanjaro via this route is less recommended due to the higher elevation of the first day, which may increase the risk of altitude sickness. The climb can be completed within 6 or 7 days.

Day 1 - Shira Gate to Simba Camp
Embark on a 1-2 hour hike through shrubs and giant heather from Shira Gate, after completing entry formalities at Londorossi Gate. The trail leads to Simba Camp, situated at an elevation of 11,800 ft. Take in the captivating views of the heath habitat during this relatively easy day, allowing for acclimatization.
Day 2 - Simba Camp to Shira 2 Camp
Continue your journey from Simba Camp to Shira 2 Camp, ascending to an elevation of 12,500 ft. Explore the grassy moorland and volcanic rock formations on the plateau. Enjoy a scenic route to the awe-inspiring Shira Cathedral, a remarkable rock formation surrounded by steep spires and pinnacles, before settling at Shira 2 Camp.
Day 3 - Shira 2 Camp to Lava Tower - Lava Tower to Barranco Camp
Embark on a 4-5 hour hike, heading east along a ridge and then southeast towards the iconic Lava Tower, a 300 ft tall volcanic rock formation. Descend to Barranco Camp through the unique and beautiful Senecio Forest, reaching an altitude of 13,000 ft. Although you begin and end the day at the same elevation, spending time at a higher altitude aids in acclimatization.
Day 4 Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Descend into a ravine, navigating the base of the Great Barranco Wall, and conquer the steep, non-technical climb up the nearly 900 ft cliff. Cross hills and valleys before sharply descending into Karanga Valley. Conclude the day at Karanga Camp, with an elevation of 13,106 ft. This shorter day is designed to enhance acclimatization.
Day 5 - Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Leave Karanga Camp and join the junction connecting with the Mweka Trail. Ascend through the rocky section, reaching Barafu Hut at an elevation of 15,331 ft. At this point, you have completed the Southern Circuit, granting you various panoramic views of the summit. Rest, have an early dinner, and prepare for the summit day. The prominent peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo are visible from this vantage point.
Day 6 - Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak - Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
Begin the most challenging portion of the trek in the early morning, aiming for the summit. The mentally and physically demanding ascent takes several hours, with breaks along the way. Near Stella Point (18,900 ft), experience a breathtaking sunrise over Mawenzi Peak. Finally, reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. Descend to Mweka Hut via Barafu for lunch, navigating rocky terrain that can be strenuous on the knees. Mweka Camp, located in the upper forest, awaits you for a well-des erved rest.
Day 7 - Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
Continue the descent to Mweka Gate, where summit certificates are collected. Lower elevations may be wet and muddy, so be prepared for such conditions. From the gate, journey for another hour to Mweka Village. A vehicle will be waiting to transport you back to your hotel in Arusha, marking the end of your remarkable Kilimanjaro expedition. Although the Shira Route provides an alternative and scenic path to Kilimanjaro's summit, it is important to note the higher starting elevation and the associated risks of altitude sickness. Adequate physical preparation, acclimatization, and careful monitoring of symptoms are essential for a safe and successful climb.
